Genius or Arse #4
Mel Gibson: Having seen Irreversible, Antichrist, Baise Moi, Audition (+ other Miike films), both Funny Games, Requiem for a Dream, and Spice World, it takes a lot to shock this writer. In saying that, after listening to the leaked Mel Gibson tapes I was positively disgusted. This guy’s supposed to be a devout Christian yet, allegedly hates homosexuals, clearly hates women, allegedly beats women, allegedly hates Jews, drink drives and – more generally – is an all-round out-and-out scrotum. When he’s not massive being a ball-bag in his free time, he’s a ‘practical joker’ on set, playing pranks like flashing his ass, making actors do scenes with clown noses, nailing nude pics of co-stars to crew notice boards and pretending to be a dangerous stalker, or an offensive German alter ego. Most shockingly, if you look at his 25 year career, for such a high-profile actor he hasn’t actually been in a single great film… (Braveheart maybe, but as a Scot, that’s a whole other story!) Not unlike a chronic disease, Gibson is becoming worse and worse but never seems to fuck off.
Verdict: While this has hardly a fair trial, it’s getting harder and harder to defend this guy. Jury votes are in: ‘King of the Arses’
The Edge of Genius or William WallArse – You Decide
Arse, don’t care if he was the most amazing actor ever. He is a despicable human being.

Like you say – no truly ‘great’ films…he was never a genius and never will be. Mel you’re an arse!

I say that perhaps his frontal lobe was damaged while performing a stunt or something.

Yeah, he is an arse. I try not to pay attention to Hollywood bigs personal whoopsies or opinions too often (if I did there would end up being very few left for me to like) but it’s really difficult to ignore Mel’s outbursts lately whether or not they’ve been in public or set up in the privacy of his home. I don’t care to listen to the tapes, and have no desire to listen to anything, but I can’t ignore what a giant doucher he’s been lately. I still dig his movies, some are just simply great, and he’s one of the greatest action stars ever, but personally he’s a lost a cause.

I totally agree with Kaiderman! He is a marvelous actor and a director. But his personality- at least when it comes to dating and religion seems to be awful…
But.. yeah, there is a but coming. He is not pyschologically very healthy and I am not saying this as an insult but as a fact. He has bipolar disorder, which is a very shitty mental disorder to have. You can go from immensely happy to suicidal in seconds. While it doesn’t excuse racism, it also doesn’t make for a very well- functioning human either. He needs therapy.
And I refuse to evaluate actors’ works based on his character, because well, do you guys remember Woody Allen sleeping with his adopted daughter? Roman Polanski under-aged girl incident? Morgan Freeman taking off with his step grandaughter? Hugh Grant cheating on Liz Hurley with a prostitute? Christian Bale’s insane rant on the set (which was made into a mash tape with Mel’s rant- it is hilarious) and don’t get me started on Tom Cruise!
So , looks like many actors and film-makers seem to be (a little?) nuts. I can bash them all I want, but I am not giving up on their work. Or at this rate, we will be left with a handful of decent men and not so many movies to watch!

Always watchable specially in his mulletted heyday.

He done a lot for Scotland. As a fellow Scot, I appreciate the effect it had on the Scootish outlook but yes, unfortunately he’s still an arse.
