While I do feel that Rushmore is the better of the two films, Darjeeling seemed to be a step in the right direction for Anderson after the disappointing Life Aquatic. It combined the humor and quirk of Rushmore with the pathos of Tenenbaums, and for that reason, I think Darjeeling is Anderson’s most mature work, even if it isn’t his best.

Meanwhile, I loved it. It’s thematically appropriate, and I’m really glad Joe Carnahan had the chutzpah to avoid another terrible Legends of the Fall climax. Given that when we meet him he’s a purposeless wreck of a man intent on taking his own life, I’d say that Ottway “wins” just by virtue of making the decision to fight for his life after he previously was so ready to throw it away.

Neeson’s amazing here. I don’t think there’s any question how much inspiration he took from Natasha Richardson’s death three years back; he’s raw and open here, turning out a great and emotional performance.

In films like this the story just exists as an excuse to stage awesome fight scenes, so I think martial arts films (today at least) live or die based on how well they match up to these criteria:

1) The fight scenes have to be outstanding.
2) The stuff in between the fight scenes has to be tolerable.

At points Ip Man is above average, but I agree that overall the story isn’t the real draw here. Donnie Yen’s flailing fists of fury are what you’re checking this out for.

Who would have guessed that Reynolds could give this powerful or accomplished performance? Watching the DVD extras was fascinating learning how they shot it (amazing coffin with removable panels so that the camera could do a 360!), and made me admire the director and cinematographer even more. Great review!
