Haven’t seen this either. The trailer got me hooked, but it isn’t playing in my town, so… I’ll probably wait for the DVD. Like Jaina said, brainless fun. I’m all for it.

Unlike Russell Betney here, I love Statham do death, and thank the Action God every time he makes a new film. Haven’t seen this, but I admit the trailer is kick-ass, so I’ve high expectations for it.

Surprisingly, I enjoyed this… quite a lot, actually. Refreshing, in regards to the usual crap Hollywood passes up as comedy. The only thing I could’ve done without was the “feel good” stuff they started throwing near the end.

“the story would have had more impact as a flat-out documentary” – couldn’t agree more. As it is, I’ll admit it, I found this to be boring as hell. I barely sat through it.

Great review. I’ve always been on the fence with this film. I love Matt Damon, but I’ve heard this film to be very boring and absurd.

Great review. I agree with you on many things. Personally, I enjoyed the look, the sound and the performance by Matt Damon, but I never was very interested in what was going on or entertained by it.

Agree all around. The film just drags and drags. The last half-hour is pretty awesome, but not good enough to make amends for the rest of the movie.

Statham is one of those actors that I’ve no interest as seeing as an action star. I think I’ve seen Crank and one of the Transporters, and hated them both. He was great in Snatch, but otherwise I’ll just avoid him. Safe sounds no different from anything else he’s done recently, exactly as you say.

I agree that Ryan Gosling is the standout and that the climactic scene is great. I enjoyed it a lot more than you did and rated it higher, though.

I’ve been meaning to see M:I:2, but I just haven’t gotten around to it, even though I saw the first M:I back in August of last year and the most recent shortly after it came out. I haven’t seen M:I:III either. People keep telling me to skip this one, but there’s some voice inside me that seems to not want me to skip any part of any series. It’s like leaving a huge gap, even if it’s a bad film, and hey, I love reviewing bad movies. It unleashes my (as well as any critic’s) God-given right to rant! :D Great review, as always: succint, yet utterly complete. I truly dig your blog.

I’m with fernandorafael – the pop culture references and all of the meta stuff makes Community stand out from all the other comedies and sitcoms on TV at the moment. Though, it does make it slightly less accessible – either you get those moments, or you don’t.

Season 2′s excellent. It just gets better. Incredibly underrated and one of the funniest things on TV at the moment.

I actually think the “meta” and pop-culture referencing aspects of Community, as well as its parodies, are the biggest strengths of the show. I’ve seen every episode, so I agree that the first season is not perfect but this series just gets better every year. It’s one of the most underrated shows on air.

Completely agree. I wasn’t looking forward to it all that much until the first trailer. I was a little bit scared of it, just worrying that it could be a total disaster.

Worked out brilliantly. Epic superhero film.

Nice review dude. I was afraid I’d been looking forward to this a bit too much, but I wasn’t disappointed. Great fun, and I cannot wait for the Blu-Ray. Also, apparently the Yanks are getting another post-credits bit as well! From what I hear, it’s nothing Earth-shattering, just a pay-off for an earlier gag, but it sounds like a fun little bit. Damn Yankees!

Agree with every word of that. Nicely summarised. I was skeptical too but Whedon managed to deliver a perfect Blockbuster with tonnes of geek out moments and a nice script.

Can’t believe I would have missed this film if I hadn’t read your review. It’s all you say and more. Great climax. The only sore point for me was the tiger attack. Too obviously cgi. Maybe better editing could have made it more real. But this scene lasts maybe 2 seconds out of a 2 hour movie and, for me, was the only time I questioned the reality of what I was watching. Brilliant!

Don’t be. It’s great watching it purely because I manage to find another dozen things wrong with it. A scene that comes to mind is when Ali Larter drugs Idris Elba to have her way with him. The funny part is when he’s stumbling on his way back to his hotel room, you see that HE is fuzzy, but everything else is crystal clear.

I have seen two historial South Korean films, TaeGukGi and The Good, The Bad, The Weird. The former is a Korean War drama while the latter is an action-comedy set in 1930s Manchuria. In the case of TaeGukGi, I appreciated its fair look at the war by showing that both sides were equally capable of committing wartime atrocities, while many American movies about the same war instantly say, “Communists were bad, anticommunists were good.”

At the same time, in The Good, The Bad, The Weird, the Imperial Japanese Army has a pretty significant presence. The Japanese were used more or less purely for comedic effect; I feel like a Chinese movie about the same time and place would only depict the Japanese in an effort to villainize them (to be fair, they did commit the Rape of Nanking among other things). Thus, that is why I feel like from what I’ve seen, South Korean film generally tries to be fair about everything historical.
